Should We Teach Students How or What to Think? | Classical Education vs. Modern Education
This week's Classical Et Cetera addresses an important question about traditional education: What is the difference between teaching children *how* to think and *what* to think?
Martin Cothran defends his stance that teachers in classical education prioritize teaching students how to think and what to do, contrasting it with modern and public education's focus on what to think (indoctrination) and how to do (vocational training). Our lively discussion highlights the differences in educational philosophies and curriculum that arise from comparing classical and modern teaching methods.

    Great chat. It is amazing to me that within education we are falling into the fallacy of Equivocation again and again. The point of education in my view, is to make the new generations aware of the wealth of our cultural heritage. Knowledge needs to be transmitted so past mistakes can be avoided. Is it that difficult?

    Superbly produced about a superb subject. I will listen to this over and over. I loved the statement about "It's not just about learning, but becoming." (He said it more elegantly, but it caught my attention.) It reminded me of Jo's fear when Laury set off to college. She understood that he would not come back the same.

    I feel I must state my unwanted and disagreeable opinion that MP does children a disservice by being so closed minded about books. I’ve gotten attacked in the Facebook group before for bringing this up. But most homeschoolers, especially those using more literary approaches, know who Elizabeth Yates is. Her books are used in several curriculums. I’ve only read two, but they were very good and had a lot more going for them than the likes of The Moffats and Farmer Boy.

    But doesn't a focus on knowledge content require BOTH 'what to think' and 'how to think'? Isn't the move away from 'what to think' an implicit rejection of Christian education (ie. here is what the Bible says = 'what to think' whereas progressive education wants students to 'find their own way' and determine what they think is right without that Christian ideological perspective)?

    I would love an article on this topic. It would help better understand the argument because this conversation was a bit overshadowed by the impression of and circling back to wanting to prove “I was right and you were wrong.” I don’t believe that was the intention but I am left a little confused on the actual topic.

    Just want to say how much I love this curriculum for my 2nd grader. He’s learning so much- within a few weeks I’ve gone from, “well, I guess I just need to keep him out of prison and get him a decent blue collar job” to “my kid is a genius! We need to buy a piano!” I’m kidding, but not really. He’s adopted and has pretty extreme adhd. School system chewed him up ruthlessly. Now he’s on the farm with me, thriving- learning art- reading on his own- learning Latin- and most importantly: work ethic. Thank you for guiding us every step of the way and providing such incredible structure.

      @memoriapress 10 дней назад

      Hey there! We appreciate your comment, and we completely understand your concerns. This video, "Learning Is Not Fun - and That's Okay," is mostly meant to address student education in a general way. That is to say-We believe that learning can and should be fun, wherever applicable, but that the most important and most rewarding part of education is when students work hard towards a goal and achieve it with genuine effort. This may sometimes involve learning or lessons that are not (in the most immediate way) "fun", but will help students immensely in the long run. However, we will of course admit that not all students learn in the same way. Some students need more help than others, need more guidance in particular subjects, or have significant learning challenges that hinder their progress. These kinds of students need to be supported and loved by all, as they deserve a beautiful education tailored to their specific needs. We believe we have created a curriculum that addresses these concerns with Simply Classical - www.memoriapress.com/curriculum/special-needs-about/- This curriculum has been adapted for students with significant learning challenges, and includes everything you need to teach students from ages 2-21. If you'd like to learn more, we'd also recommend watching this video from the creator of the Simply Classical program - ruclips.net/video/B-qnOQg8cdQ/видео.htmlsi=vakb8gnkenYqdpAH Please let us know if you have any questions or need anything else. Kate Birbalsingh is talking about something more than just using content to practice skills on. She is talking about indoctrinating kids with British culture. And like me, she's ok with it. There is no education without indoctrination and it's a fool who thinks that there is. Once you accept that you can't help indoctrinating, then you just have to get deliberate about choosing the doctrine. She chooses British culture. I choose Catholicism. Everyone chooses something, even if by default.

    Robin Hood is not breaking a commandment. Taking back what was stolen is police work, not theft. If Robin Hood is stealing, than so is every cop who confiscates stolen property (which they do, even when they don't yet know who it belongs to).

  • @rebelteacher
    @rebelteacher 14 дней назад

    Martin is correct that classical educators should not be using the "how to think, not what to think" slogan. This is a progressive slogan meant to deride the teaching of factual knowledge and the use of "rote learning." Birbalsingh is objecting to the progressives not to classical/traditional educators. Perhaps a better way for classical educators to think of this idea is "We teach knowledge so that students learn how to think in order that they not be deceived into thinking the thoughts that the world wants them to think."

With the facts and stories in your curriculum , I can understand how my son will be taught how to rightly consider everything he consumes in order to form his own thoughts on the world, the people in it and the issues of his day. You are 100 percent not forcing opinions on students in order to force them to think a certain way.

    Captain Blood is a good example of Sabatini’s Good Pirate. I love Scaramouche as well.I would like you to discuss ( amongst yourselves) the “Character“ of Edgar Rice Burroughs Heroes. I grew up having them read to me and I have continually re-read them over time, I am now 75. The attributes of the John Carter are so outstanding, that when we get older we realize he is The Ideal Hero. ERB’s characterization of Women(placing them on a pedestal), the love of a friend due to similarities of worldview, is crystal clear even to children.
